ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has said trade relations between Islamabad and New Delhi have been suspended since 2019 due to India imposing "hefty duties" on imports from Pakistan following the Pulwama attack.

In a written reply submitted to the National Assembly on Saturday, Dar, who also holds the post of Deputy Prime Minister, said: "India decided to impose 200 per cent duty on imports from Pakistan, Kashmir bus service and cross border trade. Suspended." Control after Pulwama attack.”

According to Dawn newspaper, Dar was responding to a question by Pakistan Peoples Party MLA Sharmila Farooqui, in which she had sought information about the trade challenge in Pakistan's relations with neighboring countries, especially India.

In March, during a press conference in London, Dar highlighted the eagerness of Pakistan's business community to resume trade activities with India. However his office later clarified that Pakistan has no plans to resume trade relations with India which have been "non-existent" since 2019.

Pakistan downgraded its ties with India after the Indian Parliament suspended Article 370 on August 5, 2019, with Islamabad believing that the decision undermines the environment for dialogue between the neighbours.

"We have advocated continued constructive engagement and result-oriented dialogue with India to resolve all outstanding issues, including the core issue of Jammu and Kashmir," Dar said on Saturday.

The External Affairs Minister said that “the responsibility is now on Delhi to take steps to create an environment conducive to peace and dialogue.”

India has been saying that it desires normal neighborly relations with Pakistan, while insisting that the onus lies on Islamabad to create an environment free of terror and hostility for such engagement.Islamabad and New Delhi have a long history of strained relations, primarily over the Kashmir issue as well as cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan.
