The number of workers employed in registered MSMEs has increased by 66 percent from the figure of 12.1 crore jobs in July last year. Of the total workers employed in these enterprises, 4.54 crore are women employees.

Currently there are 4.68 crore MSMEs registered with Udayam, of which 4.6 crore are micro enterprises which also account for a large share of employment. A micro enterprise is one in which the investment in plant and machinery or equipment does not exceed Rs 1 crore and the turnover does not exceed Rs 5 crore.

The Finance Ministry, in a monthly economic report earlier this year, had also highlighted the fact that the number of workers employed in the MSME sector has increased by 5.3 times since the government launched the Udyam portal in July 2020.

The government has simplified the registration process for these enterprises and also clarified the definition of each category so that they can avail incentives under various schemes to boost employment and income.

Small enterprise is defined as an enterprise in which investment in plant and machinery or equipment does not exceed ten crore rupees and turnover does not exceed fifty crore rupees; And

A medium enterprise is defined as an enterprise in which the investment in plant and machinery or equipment does not exceed fifty crore rupees and the turnover does not exceed two hundred fifty crore rupees.
