New Delhi: Tomato prices have reached Rs 90 per kg in the city markets due to supply disruption due to monsoon rains in several states across the country, several vegetable vendors said on Tuesday.

Tomato prices have also increased in major wholesale vegetable markets of Delhi including Azadpur Mandi, Ghazipur Mandi and Okhla Vegetable Mandi.

Many residents of the city expressed dismay over the rising prices of tomatoes in their local markets and online retailing platforms.

A local resident of Lakshmi Nagar area said, "Just a few days ago, we bought tomato for Rs 28 a kg, but now it is being sold online and in the local market for Rs 90 a kg. Vegetables have become expensive."

"Due to the rains, rates have also increased by Rs 50 a kg in wholesale markets. This is because the supply of tomatoes has reduced in the last one week. The number of trucks bringing these agricultural products from states like Maharashtra has increased. Sanjay Bhagat, a wholesale vegetable vendor at Azadpur mandi, said, “There has been a decline in Karnataka and Himachal as transportation has been affected due to heavy rains.”

Parveet, a vendor at Ghazipur vegetable market, said, earlier, tomato rates were around Rs 30-35 a kg, but in the last one week it has reached Rs 60-70 in wholesale markets.

According to another vendor at Okhla vegetable market, tomato prices have increased drastically in the last one week as the crop has been damaged due to rain.

Tomatoes do not have a long shelf life and hence they rot very quickly. The seller said supplies have been affected as a result of the rains, leading to an increase in prices.

Due to the arrival of monsoon, heavy rains are occurring in many states across the country.
