Aviyur police have registered a case under sections 286 (negligent handling of explosives endangering human life) and 304 (2) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Indian Explosives Act.

The police, in their First Information Report (FIR), said the three employees were not using any safety gear and there was no supervision when the explosives were being handled. The FIR states that two vans carrying different explosive materials - one containing electric detonators and the other containing nitrate mixture - were parked side by side, although those handling the explosives knew that these materials would be mixed during loading and unloading. Keeping one close to another may cause an accident. Accident.

It said that the fatal accident occurred due to careless handling.

Two of the four partners who run the stone quarry and a nearby explosives storage unit have been arrested in connection with the accident.

Superintendent of Police K. Firoz Khan Abdullah said that both the stone quarry and the explosive storage unit had valid licenses till 2027.

The bodies of the three workers - A Kandasamy, 49, S Periyadurai, 27, and R Gurusamy, 55 - were handed over to the families after post-mortem at the Virudhunaga Government Medical College Hospital.
