CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday unanimously passed a resolution urging the Center to conduct caste-based census soon.

The resolution moved by Chief Minister MK Stalin said that the central government should immediately start the census this time along with the caste-based population census, which is scheduled to be conducted from 2021.

The resolution said, "This House considers that caste based population census is necessary for formulating policies to ensure equal rights and equal opportunities in education, economy and employment to every citizen of India."

MLAs from various political parties, including the BJP, supported the resolution, which was adopted by the House in the absence of key opposition AIADMK members, who were suspended from the Assembly for disrupting the proceedings.

Speaker M Appavu said the resolution was adopted unanimously.
