India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rain in these areas for the next three days.

As heavy rains continued, many areas in the southern region of the state were left waterlogged. SDRF and local people are jointly carrying out rescue operations to evacuate people in low-lying areas.

People have been asked not to go to coastal areas.

Ramasamy (46), a businessman from Kanniyakumari, told IANS that it has been raining heavily in the area and the tourist inflow has been severely affected.

The state disaster department has issued a travel alert in Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Dindigul, Coimbatore, Nilgiri Virudhunagar and Theni districts.

According to the State Disaster Management Department, SMS alerts have been sent to 2.44 crore mobile phones in the above districts on rain alert through the General Alert Protocol.

Due to the forecast of heavy and very heavy rains, tourists have also been advised not to visit these places.

The IMD said that heavy and very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over these areas for the next three days and this is due to a cyclonic formation over these areas.
