CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday handed over permits to farmers allowing them to remove soil and silt from the bottom of lakes, tanks, channels and reservoirs for free.

The move follows the government's decision to allow potters and farmers to carry pottery and sediment for agricultural activities.

"The sediment and soil in the lakes, ponds and canals under the control of the Department of Water Resources, Rural Development and Municipal Administration may be taken free of cost by farmers and potters for agricultural use and making pottery, which will benefit them and There will be deepening of reservoirs, as well," a release here said.

The Chief Minister had said on June 12 that this initiative would help in conserving more rain water in the reservoirs.

For ease of implementing the scheme, the government amended the Tamil Nadu Minor Mineral Concession Rules, 1959 to provide permission through Tehsildars instead of District Collectors for requests received through the website tnesevai.tn.gov.in.

Guidelines have also been issued by the Department of Natural Resources on June 25 to implement the scheme, the release said.

The Chief Minister inaugurated the scheme by handing over permits to ten farmers and potters from Kanchipuram district.

Farmers and pottery makers can apply online through the website tnesevai.tn.gov.in and avail the benefits, the release said.
