An interesting story unfolded amid an interesting political face-off in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Kolkata, West Bengal, as eleven women candidates of the ruling TMC won a landslide victory, while seven of their counterparts from the BJP faced defeat and finished runners-up. .

Actor-turned-MP Shatabdi Roy won re-election in Birbhum with 7,17,961 votes, leaving her BJP rival behind by 1,97,650 votes, continuing TMC's winning streak. Former Anganwadi worker Mithali Bagh won in Arambag by 6,399 votes.Veteran politician Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar won from Barasat by a decisive margin of 1,14,189 votes, while first-time candidate Dr Sharmila Sarkar won from Bardhaman Purba by 1,60,572 votes.

Even amid TMC's celebratory victory, there was a touch of drama and disappointment as first-time Lok Sabha candidate Sujata Mondol from Bishnupur suffered a close defeat by 5,567 votes.Overall, 72 women candidates from different parties competed for seats in West Bengal, with TMC fielding the highest number of 12 women candidates, followed by BJP seven, CPI(M) six, SUCI(Communist) There were five and 41 independent candidates.
