Kolkata: Senior Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee underwent minor back surgery at a Kolkata hospital on Sunday and his condition is said to be stable, medical establishment officials said.

The 37-year-old Diamond Harbor MP, who is also the nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was admitted to the hospital in the morning, they said.

"Abhishek Banerjee underwent surgery and is now hemodynamically stable," a hospital official said.

The official said that a minor plastic surgery was performed on Banerjee's back.

"It is nothing serious... If everything goes well, we can consider discharging him this evening itself," the officer said.

Banerjee, the TMC national general secretary and de facto number two in the party, said on Wednesday that she would be taking leave from organizational work due to some urgent medical reasons.

"In light of some serious medical reasons, I am taking leave from the organization for some time. This leave will be an opportunity for me to humbly explore and understand the needs of our people and community. I trust the Government of West Bengal to expeditiously Will act and leave no stone unturned to ensure justice for those in need,” he said in a post on X.
