Kolkata: Members of the Trinamool Congress student wing on Thursday protested outside the offices of the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar of Burdwan University, disrupting the ongoing Executive Council meeting.

They were protesting against Professor Gautam Chakraborty continuing as interim VC and taking academic and administrative decisions.

Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) workers entered the administrative building shouting slogans, due to which the meeting was adjourned.

Student protesters surrounded Registrar Sujit Chaudhary in the parking lot upon his arrival and demanded that no meeting be held when the Supreme Court-appointed search committee oversees the appointment of vice-chancellors in 31 state universities.

A TMCP spokesperson criticized the university's handling of jailed Maoist leader Arnab Dam's PhD application and alleged undemocratic practices despite his successful PhD entrance exam results. “We will continue our agitation until Dam is allowed to pursue his PhD,” the spokesperson said.

TMC leader Kunal Ghosh posted on Twitter, "Arnab Dam, arrested for being a Maoist, should be allowed to do his PhD. He has proved his worth."

Efforts to contact the VC of Burdwan University for comment were unsuccessful. A university official said various administrative and academic matters were to be discussed during the EC meeting.
