New Delhi: Trinamool Congress on Thursday filed a complaint with the Election Commission against West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose, alleging that he campaigned for the BJP by wearing their party's election symbol at an event in Kolkata.

In a complaint to the Chief Election Commissioner, the TMC claimed that the Governor was "seen wearing the BJP logo" on his chest while attending the Ram Temple event in Kolkata.

“This is to bring to your knowledge and attention that the Honorable Governor of the State of West Bengal, C.V. Anand Bose, is using his good position to campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the upcoming general elections to the Lok Sabha,” TMC said in its Said in the complaint.

"Notably, on 23.01.2024, the Hon'ble Governor was wearing the BJ logo on his chest while attending a public function at Ram Mandir, Central Avenue, Kolkata, seeking votes for BJP for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.,” the party alleged.

"The conduct of the Honorable Governor is not only undemocratic and a violation of the constitutional values attached to his office, but also hampers free and fair elections in the state," he said.

TMC also pointed out that in the past, the Election Commission of India has taken action against governors who have used their offices to campaign for political parties.

"For example, in 1993, the Commission had taken action against Gulsher Ahmed, former Governor of Himachal Pradesh, on misuse of official machinery for his son's election campaign. Soon after the ECI's action, Ahmed resigned from his post ,” TMC said."More recently, in 2019, when the then Governor of Rajasthan, Kalyan Singh, had commented that Narendra Modi should be re-elected as Prime Minister, the Commission sent a complaint to the President on violation of the MCC and the Hon'ble Requested appropriate action against the Governor. Similarly, it is necessary that this Commission takes appropriate action against the Governor in order to maintain a level playing field in the ongoing general elections.

The TMC stressed that the Governor is an appointee of the President and is not expected to represent the political ideology or political viewpoint of the Central government.

TMC urged the Election Commission to take appropriate action against the Governor and stop him from "interfering" in the election process.
