New Delhi, Trinamool Congress leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay and DMK leader TR Baalu on Wednesday congratulated Om Birla on being elected as Lok Sabha Speaker for the second term and expressed hope that he will be fair towards the opposition.

Bandopadhyay said that the functioning of the House always depends on the attitude of the ruling party and the House of the opposition.

"It is my firm belief and as far as parliamentary democratic practice is concerned, the House belongs to the opposition. This attitude needs to be adopted by the ruling party," he said.

He referred to the suspension of opposition MPs in the 17th Lok Sabha and said it was "not desirable".

He also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the passage of several bills, many of which were passed without any debate.

DMK's Baalu said that now that Birla is the president, he no longer belongs to any party.

"You may have been elected by my BJP friends (but) after this there is no politics between you and the government. You do not even have any colour. You have to treat the opposition and the ruling party equally. Please be impartial, '' They said.
