Voting remained peaceful on Saturday with 55.20 per cent voting taking place till 5 pm for 13 Lok Sabha constituencies in Chandigarh, Punjab, officials said.

The only parliamentary seat in Chandigarh witnessed 62.80 percent voting.

Voting ended at 6 pm, but the turnout will increase as many people were in queues waiting for their turn to cast their votes.

In 2019, turnout in Punjab was 65.96 percent and in the Union Territory (UT) Chandigarh was 70.62 percent.

Officials said voting began at 7 a.m. amid tight security arrangements.According to Election Commission data, among the 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab, Bathinda recorded 59.25 percent voting, followed by Gurdaspur at 58.34 percent.

According to the data, 48.55 in Amritsar, 55.90 in Jalandhar, 52.39 in Hoshiarpur, 55.02 in Anandpur Sahib, 54.55 in Fatehgarh Sahib, 54.38 in Faridkot, 57.68 in Sangrur. and 58.18 percent in Patiala Voting took place.

Prominent faces in the fray are BJP candidate and four-time MP Preneet Kaur, who is seeking re-election from Patiala parliamentary constituency; and Harsimrat Badal, three-time MP; And BJP's former IAS officer Parampal Kaur Sidhu is trying her luck from Bathinda.

Former Chief Minister and Congress candidate Charanjit Singh Channi and BJP candidate Sushil Rinku are in the fray from Jalandhar reserved seat.

Former deputy chief minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa is contesting from Gurdaspur, while Congress' state chief Amarinder Singh Raja Waring is contesting from Ludhiana against BJP's Ravneet Singh Bittu.Radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh, lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act (NSA), is contesting elections from Khadoor Sahib.

In Chandigarh, BJP candidate Sanjay Tandon is facing Congress candidate and former Union Minister Manish Tiwari.

A total of 328 candidates, including 26 women, are in the fray in Punjab, while 19 candidates, including two women, are contesting in Chandigarh, officials said.

Officials said that in view of the summer conditions, arrangements like drinking water, shade, 'chhabeel' (sweet water), medical kits, oral rehydration solution (ORS) and the like have been made at the polling stations.

A total of 2,14,61,739 voters, including 1,01,74,240 women and 773 third gender voters, are eligible to vote in Punjab.6,59,805 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in Chandigarh.

A total of 24,451 polling stations were set up for the 13 Lok Sabha seats. Of these, 5,694 polling stations were identified as critical.
