Mumbai: Three people were killed and several others injured when a speeding car driven by a 72-year-old man rammed into a two-wheeler at a traffic intersection in Maharashtra's Kolhapur city on Monday afternoon. Police gave this information.

Vasant Chavan, who was driving the car, sustained injuries in the accident that occurred in Rajarampuri area at around 2.15 pm and also died of a heart attack, an official said.

CCTV footage of the horrific accident surfaced on social media, showing Chavan's white car hitting some two-wheelers before stopping suddenly at a busy traffic intersection in the city, about 375 km from Mumbai.

The deceased, who was on a motorcycle, was thrown into the air due to the impact of the accident, the officer said.

He said that Chavan, a retired employee of Kolhapur University, was going to Rajarampuri at the time of the accident.

The officer said that the three injured persons are undergoing treatment in different hospitals.

Prima facie it appears that the injured car driver suffered a heart attack soon after the accident.

However, the exact cause of his death will be known after the post mortem report comes.
