Guwahati, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said three commando battalions will be deployed in Kaziranga National Park to ensure that no animals are killed during the flood season.

Sarma told a meeting of civil, police and park officials in Kaziranga that the battalion will ensure that no animal is killed in accidents while crossing the national highway and hunters do not take advantage of flood conditions to kill wild animals.

He said around 600 personnel of a new forest battalion would be pressed into service in the Kaziranga National Park during the flood season.

The Chief Minister directed the officials to take all necessary steps for the safety of the animals and strengthen the response system.

Sarma also took stock of the loss of land in Kaziranga National Park mainly due to fast flow of river water.A joint task force comprising experts from the Forest Department, Water Resources Department and Kaziranga National Park will be formed to study the incident and recommend remedial steps.

The team will submit its report to the government within 45 days.

Based on the recommendations, the government will take appropriate steps to resolve the problem of soil erosion in the park, he said.

Sarma said about 20 marine engine boats would be pressed into service in Kaziranga to help the forest department increase surveillance in and around the park to thwart possible activities of poachers.

Since the government's action to remove illegal encroachments in Bura Chapori has yielded good results and the animals of the park have started coming there, the government will also deploy a commando battalion in the area to protect the wild animals. Added.
