Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, an MNS leader said here on Wednesday that the Maharashtra government should not extend the benefits of its 'Girl Sister' scheme for women to communities where people have two wives, especially Muslims.

Under the state government's 'Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana' announced in the annual budget last week, eligible women will be given Rs 1,500 per month.

Speaking to a Marathi news channel, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader Prakash Mahajan criticized the plan and said some aspects of it needed to be clarified.

He said, "Communities that have two wives, two or more children, especially people from the Muslim community, should not be given the benefit of this scheme."

He also criticized the government's decision to relax the conditions for granting domicile certificate.

"Lakhs of Bangladeshi people are living in Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan and they have ration cards, voter ID cards... Is the government going to give benefits to people who are not from this country?" Mahajan asked.
