Thaunaoja Basant Kumar Singh, BJP candidate from Imphal, Interior Manipur Lok Sabha constituency, on Friday described the election as important "for the unity and integrity of the state".

"This election is for the unity and integrity of the state, restoration of peace, rehabilitation of people in relief camps and overall welfare of the state," Thounaojam told reporters after casting his vote at Nambol Utlu in Bishnupur district.

Meanwhile, Congress candidate Angomcha Bimol Akoijam said, "Today's election is the first step for a new Manipur."

T Maheshwar of RPI (Athawale) said, "I am contesting this election to convey the plight of mothers and internally displaced people to the central leaders."

Six candidates are in the fray in Inner Manipur.

Meanwhile, till 11 am, around 28.19 per cent of over 15.44 lakh voters exercised their franchise for the two Lok Sabha seats in the state, officials said.

In the first four hours of polling, Inner Manipur constituency recorded 29.40 per cent voting, while Outer Manipur recorded 26.02 per cent voting.
