Palghar: Rescue workers have still not been able to locate the excavator operator trapped under the debris following excavation at a water project site in Maharashtra's Palghar district five days ago. Officials gave this information on Monday.

He said the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other rescue teams were working round the clock at the site, but neither the man nor the machine had been seen.

The excavator operator was trapped after the soil and wall structure collapsed during work on a tunnel shaft at the Surya Water Supply Project site in Sassoon Navghar village, about 50 km from Mumbai, around 9 pm on May 29.

After the incident, a search was launched by various agencies including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).Palghar district disaster cell chief Vivekanand Kadam said on Monday that cutting of the collapsed debris (with diamond cutters) was abandoned on Sunday night due to the refusal of the workers concerned to work inside the shaft despite providing all necessary safety measures. "We are now proceeding to break up the collapsed debris with excavators and remove it from the shaft after ensuring proper slope stability around the shaft," he said, according to details received from an official at the site.

He said the rescue operation is underway and the presence of NDRF at the site is very important to provide guidance and ensure further progress once the concrete walls are breached and removed.

Kadam had said last week that rescue workers had drilled a hole in the tunnel shaft and were trying to locate the trapped person with the help of cameras. He said rescue workers were moving cautiously to avoid more cave-ins.According to officials, the Surya Regional Water Supply Scheme is an initiative of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) which aims to provide drinking water to the ever-growing population in the MMR region.

A treatment plant was installed and infrastructure was created to supply treated water. Under the scheme, 403 MLD (million liters per day) water will be provided to the areas under Mira-Bhayandar and Vasai-Virar municipal corporations and surrounding villages of Palghar district.
