Bhubaneswar: Over 99.61 lakh voters will decide the fate of 460 candidates in six Lok Sabha seats and 42 assembly constituencies on Saturday amid hot and humid weather conditions in coastal Odisha, officials said.

A straight fight is expected between the ruling BJD and the opposition BJP in the coastal region, where voting will be held from 7 am to 6 pm in Mayurbhanj Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur Lok Sabha seats.

A total of 66 candidates are in the fray for Lok Sabha seats in the fourth phase of simultaneous voting in the eastern state and 39 candidates will contest from assembly constituencies.

In the 2019 elections, BJP won Mayurbhanj and Balasore seats, while Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur seats were won by BJP. Of the 4 assembly constituencies falling under these Lok Sabha seats, BJD won 34 seats, while BJ won eight seats. A total of 50.88 lakh men, 48.72 lakh women and 687 transgender persons are eligible to vote at 10,882 polling stations.Odisha Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) NB Dhall said that in view of the heat and humid conditions, special arrangements have been made at polling stations to provide essential commodities to voters.

DGP Arun Kumar Sarangi said 36,000 security personnel, including 125 companies of central forces, have been deployed in the six constituencies.

About 2,280 polling stations have been identified as critical, where deployment of central forces is required to ensure free and fair elections.

Prominent candidates in this phase include Odisha Assembly Speaker Pramila Malik, government chief whip Prashant Kumar Mudili and half a dozen Odisha ministers Sudam Marndi, Ashwini Patra, Preetiranjan Ghadai, Atanu S Nayak, Pratap Deb and K Behera. Sitting MPs – Pratap Sarangi (Balasore), Manjula Mandal (Bhadrak), Sarmistha Sethi (Jajpur) and Rajshree Malik (Jagatsinghpur) – are in the fray from their respective seats.BJD had changed its candidate from Kendrapara, while BJP has fielded a new candidate from Mayurbhanj seat.

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha's Odisha unit president Anjani Soren is contesting from Mayurbhanj and Saraskana assembly constituencies, while BJP state president Manmohan Samal is the candidate from Chandbali assembly constituency of Bhadrak Lok Sabha constituency. Former OPCC president Niranjan Patnaik is the candidate from Bhandaripokhari assembly seat.

JMM candidates are considered to play a decisive role in Mayurbhanj. Soren, who contested the last election from this seat, got more than 1 lakh votes in 2019.
