Hours after Naidu and his council of ministers took oath at a ceremony in Vijayawada, farmers removed their protest camps in villages.

Farmers, including women, had been protesting for 1,631 days demanding the YSR Congress government to develop Amaravati as the sole capital.

The protest took place in December 2019 against Chief Minister Y.S. Started after. Jagan Mohan Reddy announced that his government will develop the three state capitals, reversing the previous TDP government's decision to develop Amaravati as the sole state capital.

The Jagan Mohan Reddy government planned to develop Visakhapatnam as the administrative capital, Kurnool as the judicial capital and Amaravati as the legislative capital only.Farmers from 29 villages, who had given 33,000 acres of their land under the land pooling system when TDP was in power, took to the streets. They continued to protest in various forms.

Amravati Pariksha Samiti (APS), which is leading the agitation against the three capitals, conducted two padyatras in the last two years to garner public support for its demand.

Earlier in the day, farmers watched the live telecast of the swearing-in of Chandrababu Naidu and his cabinet colleagues on specially installed screens. At a meeting of newly elected National Democratic Alliance (NDA) MLAs on Tuesday, Naidu announced that Amaravati will be developed as the sole capital of the state. He said that Visakhapatnam will be developed as a financial capital and Kurnool will also be developed in every way.

TDP's allies Jana Sena and BJP are also in favor of developing Amravati as the sole capital of the state.

Naidu's return to power has given new hopes to farmers and others who were fighting for justice. The TDP chief had envisioned Amaravati, located on the banks of river Krishna, as a dream capital and a world-class city about a decade ago. Work on the residential quarters and other components of the mega project came to a sudden halt in 2019, months after the YSRCP came to power. The foundation stone of Amaravati was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2015 when the TDP was part of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre. Naidu had got the master plan of Amaravati prepared from Singapore. With nine theme cities and 27 townships, it was planned over an area of 217 square kilometers with development in three phases – the seed area or core capital, the capital city and the capital region.
