A male elephant died of electric shock on Shanida in a village near Kothagiri in Udhagamandalam (Tamil Nadu), Nilgiri district, when it accidentally came in contact with an overhead electricity transmission line, officials said.

According to Tamil Nadu Forest Department officials, the incident occurred when the 15-year-old elephant tried to uproot a tree, during which a nearby overhead high tension electricity cable broke and the elephant died due to electrocution.

A team of officials from TANGEDCO, state-run Power Generation Distribution Corporation and the Revenue Department inspected the spot and a team of veterinarians conducted the autopsy and determined the cause of death of the animal was electric shock.
