When BJP candidate from Bardhaman-Durgapur constituency Dilip Ghosh arrived to address the 'Chai Pe Charcha' programme, ruling party workers raised "go back" slogans, which has always been a part of their voter-interaction exercise.

Ghosh said that as soon as he reached the location, a group of local Trinamoo Congress workers started raising slogans of "go back", provoking the BJ supporters.

Eyewitnesses said BJP workers accompanying Ghosh started raising counter slogans calling all Trinamool Congress members thieves.

This further escalated the tension and a scuffle broke out between BJ workers and supporters of the ruling party, including some women.

A large contingent of police reached the spot and after much effort managed to separate the two rival groups.

Later, BJP supporters protested in front of Durgapur New Township Police Station.

The protesting Trinamool Congress workers said they had reached the spot to hold talks with Ghosh over pending central funds to the West Bengal government under various centrally sponsored schemes.

He alleged that Ghosh refused to talk to him and misbehaved with some of the people accompanying him.

However, Ghosh denied the allegations and alleged, "Deliberately they had come with a group of women to create unnecessary tension in the area."
