Hyderabad, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday decided to hold consultations with irrigation officials and discuss in the state cabinet the future action regarding the damaged structures of the Kaleshwaram Project.

An official release said Reddy held a meeting with ministers and officials and took stock of the recommendations made by the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) in the interim report on the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project and necessary measures to be taken.

NDSA has recently submitted an interim report on the repair and temporary restoration of the damaged Medigadda and Sundila barrages, which are considered to be the most critical structures in the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme.

State Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy informed the CM and ministers about the recommendations made in the interim report.

It said, “NDSA had made it clear in 2019 that danger looms around the barrages and even after measures are taken to repair and restore damaged structures, the risk factor cannot be ruled out.,

In view of the monsoon season starting in a month, the Chief Minister said that the measures to be taken in the meantime will have to be discussed in the cabinet meeting.

"The government will, in consultation with the Irrigation Department, decide whether to repair the damaged structures or consider some alternative measure," it said.

The Chief Minister said these important issues could not be discussed in detail as the Cabinet meeting scheduled for Saturday had to be postponed due to the requisite approval from the Election Commission in view of the Model Code of Conduct for the Lok Sabha elections. Not received.

The CM said that field level visits and inspections of Medigadda and Sundil barrages and pump houses need to be done soon. The damage caused to the Medigadda Barrage last year during the previous BRS regime was a major issue in the November 2024 assembly elections, when Congress and BJ attacked BRS.

BRS says losses to projects are not unusual and the government should see to it that farmers continue to benefit from the project.
