Tiruchirappalli (Tamil Nadu) [India]: A male passenger from Singapore was caught with gold worth over Rs 1 crore at Tiruchirappalli airport, the Customs Department said on Friday.

An official press release said, "Officials of the Air Intelligence Unit at Tiruchirappalli International Airport stopped a male passenger attempting to cross the Green Channel and found the paste hidden under the knee caps worn on his thighs. Gold recovered."

According to the statement, the weight of the seized gold is 1.605 kg and its market value is Rs 1.16 crore.

The passenger arrived from Singapore on Scooter Airlines TR562.

Officials said further investigation is underway.

In May this year, three passengers were arrested at Tiruchirappalli airport and 96 gold bars worth Rs 16.17 lakh were seized from them.

According to Customs, the gold bars weighing 235 grams were hidden in the screws of the lower wheels of three trolley bags carried by the accused who had come from Kuala Lumpur by Air Asia flight.

On April 27, Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) officials at Tiruchirappalli airport seized a total of 977 grams of gold worth Rs 70.58 lakh from a passenger arriving from Dubai.

According to officials, the gold was hidden in three packets containing 1081 grams of paste-like material in the passenger's rectum. A passenger traveling from Dubai to Trichy by Air India Express was arrested.
