CHENNAI: With an aim to reduce environmental impact and save cost of running buses using diesel, the Tamil Nadu government on Thursday introduced CNG and LNG buses for select routes on an experimental basis.

The move to run buses using alternative fuels will save the government 7-20 per cent on the total expenditure and help reduce the carbon footprint of the state transport department.

According to an official release, around 1.76 crore people are served daily by 20,160 diesel buses operated by various transport corporations. About 27 percent of the expenditure incurred by transport corporations is on fuel.

Based on Chief Minister MK Stalin's order to use buses running on alternative fuels, Transport Minister SS Shivshankar said 14 buses using liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) will be operated by seven transport corporations. Will be done. Will be done. Experimental basis.

At a function here, he formally launched this service in the transport corporations run by Chennai, Villupuram, Kumbakonam.

The minister also issued appointment orders on "compassionate grounds" to the legal heirs of 49 employees of transport corporations who lost their lives in the line of duty.
