TAIPEI [Taiwan], Amid rising tensions in the region, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense on Monday said it tracked nine Chinese military aircraft and seven naval ships in the vicinity of Taiwan, Taiwan News reported.

According to the MND, "Five of the nine People's Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft crossed the Taiwan Strait midline in the southwest and northeast areas of the country's air defense identification zone (ADIZ)."

In response, Taiwan dispatched aircraft and naval ships and deployed coastal-based missile systems to monitor PLA activity, according to Taiwan News.

The incursion by PLA assets into Taiwan's airspace underscores rising tensions in the region, as Taiwan grapples with increased military activity from mainland China.

The latest incident underlines Taiwan's unwavering commitment to safeguard its territorial integrity and sovereignty amid increasing provocations.

Concerns are growing over the potential effects of an increased military posture in one of Asia's most volatile flashpoints.

So far this month, Taiwan has tracked Chinese military aircraft 85 times and naval/coast guard ships 85 times. Since September 2020, China has increased its use of gray zone tactics by increasing the number of military aircraft and naval ships operating around Taiwan.

Gray zone strategy is defined as "a series of efforts or efforts beyond steady-state deterrence and reassurance that attempt to achieve one's security objectives without resorting to the direct and large use of force."

This comes at a time when tensions between China and Taiwan are at an all-time high. Despite never ruling Taiwan, China's ruling Communist Party considers it part of its territory and threatens to conquer it by force if necessary.
