At the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, India were in a delicate position of 39/3 in 7.5 overs before Suryakumar Yadav scored an unbeaten 50 off 49 balls while Dubey, who struggled early on, remained unbeaten on 31 off 35 balls. ,

Left-handed batsman Dubey found his rhythm by hitting a six off Corey Anderson in the 15th over and managed to make an unbeaten partnership of 72 runs in 65 balls with fellow Mumbaikar Suryakumar.

“I had to wait for the right ball. It was not easy to come in and start hitting. The plan was to take the game deeper. The ball was sticking and staying low. I don't think such a pitch has been seen in any T20 World Cup. A ball came rapidly from the same place and stuck to the other surface. It was very difficult to predict,” Dubey told reporters at the conclusion of the match.

He also quipped that the difficulty of batting on New York's drop-in pitches means he is not able to bat freely, which he usually does for India and his IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings.

"It felt like (playing Ranji Trophy). I don't think in white ball the conditions dictate how you want to play here. You have to choose your best shot to hit a six. Here, I was waiting for that chance. It is not easy to come here and start hitting from the first ball, you have to take your time.”

"Obviously I miss hitting sixes in CSK and India... It's difficult to bat here in these conditions and in the nets as well. It's definitely better to bowl here, I would have bowled more but the six was hit and Didn't get the chance,'' he said.

Despite his struggles on the tough New York batting pitches, Dubey is not eager to let go of those circumstances and the lessons learned from them."I won't erase it from my memory because it's my first World Cup. Just batting is difficult."

“But we had a good partnership and we finished early so I would say it was a little easier to chase after winning. The ball was skidding, staying low, staying sideways and coming out of some pitches too fast – it did all sorts of things. So, it was difficult to take decisions (as a batsman) and I don't think you have ever seen that in a T20 World Cup.,

Dubey signed off by saying that he got the necessary support from the Rahul Dravid-led coaching staff to overcome his batting struggles. "All the support staff and coaches supported me and told me, 'It's difficult, but you've got the ability to hit sixes, so go for it'."

“I have never doubted myself for what I have done in the past. I just think that the circumstances don't demand what I have done at CSK. These conditions require a different approach, so I was batting differently here.”
