Guyana [West Indies] Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran's formidable opening partnership took Afghanistan to 183/5 against Uganda in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 Group C match on Monday (local time).

The duo also recorded the second highest opening partnership in the Men's T20 World Cup by making a partnership of 154 runs against Uganda. Gurbaz top-scored with 76 off 45, while opener Zadran scored 70 off 46 balls to take Afghanistan to a fighting score.

Electing to bat first, Afghanistan's openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran took advantage of good batting conditions, where the ball was coming onto the bat and the outfield was good, scoring quickly in a short period of time. Uganda gave away easy runs as the team failed to field from the start.Gurbaz took the lead initially, but Zadran joined him by hitting four consecutive fours in the sixth over. At the end of the first powerplay, Afghanistan's score was 11 runs per over.

The score of 75-0 is Afghanistan's highest powerplay score in the T20 World Cup, better than 64/2 against South Africa at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai in 2016.

The burst of boundaries continued for Gurbaz and Zadran as the Ugandan bowlers were made to work hard against the well-set batsmen. Gurbaz completed his half-century in the ninth over by hitting four sixes and two fours, his first half-century in the T20 World Cup.Afghanistan crossed the 100-run mark in the 10th over. Reaching close to 10, Afghanistan looked all set to score the highest score of the tournament. Bilal Shah's brilliant 25-run over, which included five no-balls and five wides, helped Afghanistan cross the 150-run mark.

It was captain Brian Masaba who gave Uganda their first wicket of the competition, leaving one wicket short and clean bowling Ibrahim Zadran. Alpesh Ramjani then dismissed the well-set batsman Gurbaz for 76 runs.

Najibullah Zadran and Gulbadin Naib gave away their wickets easily without scoring much runs.Afghanistan could score only 27 runs in the last five overs. Cosmas Qivutha and Brian Masaba brought their team back into the match and both took two wickets respectively to restrict Afghanistan to 183/5.
