Swapna Suresh and her lawyer appeared before a trial court at Taliparamba in Kannur district and were granted bail in the defamation case filed by CPI(M) state secretary MV Govindan.

Soon after getting bail, his lawyer said that he wanted both CM Vijayan and his daughter to show courage like Govindan.

“We challenge both Vijayan and his daughter to file a defamation case against the revelations made by them. We want both of them to show courage like Govindan,” Suresh's lawyer said.

Govindan filed a defamation case against Suresh after he publicly stated that a man named Vijesh Pillai had met him in Bengaluru last year and threatened him.

He alleged that Vijesh Pillai had told him that Govindan had threatened to eliminate him if he did not withdraw the charges against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his family.

Suresh claimed that Vijesh Pillai told him that Govindan wanted him to accept Rs 30 crore and had offered him all possible help if he went to Malaysia.

Govindan had taken him under his wing legally and demanded Rs 1 crore as damages in the defamation case.

On Thursday Suresh insisted, "I stand by whatever I said then", while his lawyer said he was challenging Govindan to file a civil case.

Suresh was in the news in the gold smuggling case of 2020.

His arrest led to the arrest of senior IAS officer and principal secretary to CM Vijayan, M Sivasankar.

Suresh had then alleged that Vijayan was engaged in smuggling of currencies and gold and had challenged the CM and his daughter to file a defamation case against him.
