Bengaluru, Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi has held discussions with ISRO regarding the use of space technology-based inputs to analyze flood risk associated with Mullaperiyar and Idukki dams in Kerala.

The Kerala MP, who is also the Minister of State for Tourism, met ISRO Chairman Somnath S at Antriksh Bhawan here on Tuesday, the space agency said.

It said that in view of the increasing incidence of extreme weather events across the country, the minister expressed the view that there is an urgent need to evaluate the worst-case flood scenario associated with these dams.

According to ISRO, Somnath assured ISRO's support in providing space-based inputs such as high-resolution terrain data to researchers engaged in flood modeling to assess potential floods and identify potential rehabilitation areas.

They also suggested developing a prototype solution integrating flood risk with rescue and rehabilitation planning along with satellite communication capabilities, as well as capacity building on the role of space-based support for disaster management .

Gopi stressed the need to study the extent and nature of silt in the dams and evaluate the potential use of the sludge to support local industries.
