A three-judge bench, headed by CJI D. Y. Chandrachud, will consider the new status report of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The CBI on Saturday arrested Abhijit Mondal, former officer-in-charge of Tala police station, under whose jurisdiction R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital arises in connection with the rape and murder of a trainee doctor on the premises of the state-run hospital. Mondal was in charge of the police station when the doctor's body was recovered from the hospital's seminar room on the morning of August 9.

Sandip Ghosh, former director of R.G. Kar Hospital, which was earlier arrested by the CBI in the case of financial irregularities in the institution and is currently in judicial custody, has also been declared "arrested" in the rape and murder case.

At the hearing, senior advocate Indira Jaising will represent the West Bengal Young Doctors Forum (WBJDF), the umbrella organization of young doctors in the state protesting against the "horrible" incident.

On the other hand, the West Bengal Joint Platform of Doctors, an association of senior doctors of the state who are extending support to the ongoing protest movement of young doctors in the rape and murder case, will be represented by senior lawyers Karuna Nandi level. and Sabyasachi Chattopadhyay.

In an earlier hearing, the SC told the CBI to submit a fresh status report by September 17 and took note of the status report submitted by the central agency in terms of its earlier order.

"Now we have seen the progress of the ongoing investigation. We do not want to comment on anything in public hearing. We will give you a week to tell us what other clues have emerged in the course of the investigation," said the Court, also made up of judges J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra.

Taking suo moto cognizance of the rape and murder case of the trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital, the Supreme Court termed the incident as "horrible", raising the "systemic issue of safety of doctors across the country".

"We are deeply concerned about the lack of safe working conditions for young doctors across the country, especially in public hospitals," he said.

The apex court ordered formation of a National Task Force (NTF) to suggest measures for the safety of medical professionals across the country, observing that safety of doctors is the "utmost national concern".

He further asked the NTF, set up by the government under his leadership, to listen to various medical associations while formulating effective recommendations related to the safety, working conditions and welfare of doctors and medical professionals.
