Justice Abhay S. A bench of Justices Oka and Ujjal Bhuiyan was hearing an application filed by an NGO seeking directions to restore the river bed to its natural state and remove silt, mud and garbage to a depth of 5 metres. ,

The bench has asked the Centre, Uttar Pradesh government and the Agriculture Development Authority to file compliance affidavits by the end of June 2024.

"While filing the affidavit, the three authorities shall clearly mention the name of the authority which is duty bound to carry out the continuous work of removal of silt, sludge and garbage from the Yamuna river bed," it said. ,

The top court said that if the authorities concerned require advice from an expert agency to ensure cleanliness of the river bed, the Central government will take an appropriate decision in such a matter.

"Needless to add that removal of dirt, mud and garbage from the river bed of Yamuna should be a continuous activity," the Supreme Court order said.

Further hearing of the case will be held on July 11.

In its application filed before the top court, the Agra Development Foundation said that around 90 surface drains flow towards and join the Yamuna river, many of them contain untreated and unused waste water, which is mixed with solid waste, sludge, polythene and plastic.
