New Delhi: The country's sugar production till April 15 in the current 2023-24 season declined slightly to 31.0 million tonnes due to lower production in Karnataka, according to industry body ISMA data released on Tuesday.

Sugar production in the same period of 2022-2 season stood at 31.23 million tonnes.

India is a major sugar producing country in the world. Sugar season runs from October to September. Currently, sugar exports are banned indefinitely.

The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has revised the net sugar production estimate for the 2023-24 season to 32 million tonnes.

According to the latest ISMA data, sugar production in Maharashtra, the country's leading sugar producing state, stood at over 10.92 million tonnes in the current season till April 15, compared to 10.59 million tonnes in the year-ago period.

Similarly, production in Uttar Pradesh, the country's second largest sugar producing state, increased from 9.67 million tonnes to 10.14 million tonnes in the said period.

However, in Karnataka, the country's third-largest sugar producing state, production till April 15 of the current 2023-24 season declined slightly to 5.06 million tonnes, compared to 5.49 million tonnes in the year-ago period.

During the said period, sugar production in both Gujarat and Tamil Nadu came down to 9,19,00 tonnes and 8,60,000 tonnes respectively.

ISMA said that the pace of closure of sugar mills in the first fortnight of April this year has been much higher than last year. Around 128 mills have closed their operations till April 15 this season, while 55 mills had closed operations in the same period last year.

Overall, 448 factories have completed their crushing operations across the country, while 401 factories were closed as of mid-April last year, it said.
