The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Upper Yamuna River Board to convene an emergency meeting on June 5 of all stakeholder states to resolve the water crisis faced by Delhi residents. Amid water shortage in the national capital, the Delhi government on Friday approached the Supreme Court seeking immediate additional water from neighboring Haryana.

The Delhi government, in its petition, said that it was compelled to file the petition due to the acute water shortage being faced by the people of Delhi due to the ongoing scorching heat in North India, especially in Delhi. The petition said, “Respondent no. 1 (Haryana) to immediately and continuously release water at Wazirabad Barrage."

It said record-high temperatures and heat waves in Delhi have led to maximum temperatures rising to nearly 50 degrees Celsius at some places, leading to extraordinary and excessive increase in water demand in the city.The petition said that as a result, the national capital is suffering from water shortage, leading to frequent supply cuts in many parts of NCT Delhi and disrupting the daily life of common residents. It further said, "The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi has taken all administrative measures to ensure optimization, rationing and targeted supply of water in the National Capital; nevertheless, water scarcity remains severe and from all indicators it is clear that the NCT of Delhi is There is a dire need for additional water."

It said that to deal with this unexpected demand during the summer months, the Delhi government has already devised a solution to meet the increasing demand for water in the national capital - the state of Himachal Pradesh, by sharing its surplus water. Has agreed to do. Delhi.
