New Delhi, The staff association of St Stephen's College has urged the institute's governing body to grant admission to all students whose applications were rejected despite being allotted seats by Delhi University.

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday allowed seven students seeking admission to the university on the basis of seats allotted by Delhi University to attend classes there.

Teachers at St Stephen's College, at a staff association meeting on Wednesday, resolved that all students who were allocated places at the college had the option of admission.

The staff association said it requested the governing body to immediately ensure that these students were granted admission whether there was a court order or not.

"It is our understanding that the university should admit all these students as a special case for this year while continuing legal procedures/administrative talks with the university. This will not cause any harm in academic, social and practical terms; in fact, it is the only that can be done in a considerate, humane and ethical way," the association stated.

The petitioners had claimed that despite the university allocating them seats for the BA Economics (Honours) and BA courses, their admissions were not completed within the stipulated time.

While the university supported the petitioners, the faculty opposed them.

The college also objected to the university's stand that it was required to admit all candidates who were allotted seats through the Common Seat Allocation System of Delhi University.

The university said it could only admit students within the authorized limit.

The staff association has written to the governing body to grant admission to all students who had previously been denied admission.

Seven of the 22 students who were denied admission approached the high court and got relief on Tuesday.

The remaining students, including three orphans, still remain uncertain. They had not approached the high court for admission.
