Colombo [Sri Lanka], Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe today left for New Delhi to attend the much-awaited swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi.

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabri informed about the departure of Sri Lankan President Wickremesinghe in a social media post.

"President Ranil Wickremesinghe left for New Delhi a short time ago at the invitation of the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, to attend his swearing-in ceremony this evening," he said in a post on Twitter.

PM Modi is set to become the Prime Minister of India for the third consecutive time with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) emerging victorious in the parliamentary elections.

He will equal Jawaharlal Nehru's record of becoming Prime Minister of India for the third time after serving two full terms.

Leaders of neighboring countries and the Indian Ocean region are set to attend this much-awaited event as special guests.This gathering highlights India's unwavering dedication to its 'Neighbourhood First' policy and 'SAGAR' initiative.

Earlier, Sri Lankan President Wickremesinghe had accepted PM Modi's invitation to attend his swearing-in ceremony.

President Wickremesinghe congratulated PM Modi over the phone on the election victory of the BJP-led NDA.

During his conversation, PM Modi invited President Wickremesinghe to his oath ceremony, which the Sri Lankan President accepted.

"During the conversation, Prime Minister @NarendraModi invited President Wickremesinghe to his swearing-in ceremony, which President @RW_UNP accepted," the Media Division of the Sri Lankan President said in a post earlier on Twitter.

"President Ranil Wickremesinghe congratulates Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the election victory of the @BJP4India-led NDA in a phone call," the post said.

Extending his warm wishes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the victory of the BJP-led alliance in the parliamentary elections in the country, President Ranil Wickremesinghe had earlier said that Sri Lanka looks forward to further strengthening the partnership with India.In a post on Twitter, the Sri Lankan President said, "I extend my hearty congratulations to the @BJP4India led NDA on its victory, demonstrating the faith of the Indian people in progress and prosperity under the leadership of PM @NarendraModi."

He said, “Being its closest neighbour, Sri Lanka looks forward to further strengthening its partnership with India.”

After the ceremony, President Draupadi Murmu will host a banquet for the dignitaries at Rashtrapati Bhavan this evening.
