Jaishankar and President Wickremesinghe jointly unveiled the virtual plaque to mark the formal commissioning of the MRCC set up by Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL).

They also joined in the virtual handover of 154 new houses built under the Indian Housing Development Partnership initiative.

As many as 106 houses have been built in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Matale districts, while 24 houses each have been built in Colombo and Trincomalee districts.

They add to the 3,700 houses already built that are part of the 4,000 that will be built in Phase 3 of the Indian Housing Project (IHP), an initiative adopted by India after the destruction caused by the three-decade war that put end in 2009.

After the end of the civil war, the Indian government launched a project to build 50,000 houses at a cost of 33 billion (Sri Lankan) rupees throughout Sri Lanka, covering all 25 districts, including the northern and eastern provinces devastated by the war and the central hills. where Tamils ​​of Indian origin work on the tea plantations.

This is Jaishankar's first official visit after the formation of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government.

He also met Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and his counterpart M.U.M. Alisabry.

Confident that our development assistance and capacity building programs will continue to meet the aspirations of the people of Sri Lanka," the EAM posted in X after his meeting with Gunawardena on Thursday afternoon.

Among other issues, Jaishankar is also expected to discuss Prime Minister Modi's possible visit to Sri Lanka later this year.

The Sri Lankan president was in New Delhi on June 9 to attend Prime Minister Modi's swearing-in ceremony.

During his visit, Wickramasinghe invited the Prime Minister to visit Sri Lanka.
