New Delhi: The Department of Telecommunications is expected to issue a demand note to telecom companies this week for payment for the spectrum purchased in the recently concluded auction, according to a source.

The auction – this time spread over two days in seven rounds – sold 141.4 MHz of radio waves for Rs 11,340.78 crore.

In all, 10,500 MHz radiowaves used for mobile services worth more than Rs 96,238 crore were put on the block during the auction that began on June 25.

Sunil Mittal's Airtel emerged as the biggest bidder for radio waves, capturing nearly 60 per cent of the spectrum worth Rs 11,341 crore sold in this auction.

Airtel bid and won airwaves worth Rs 6,856.76 crore, and rival Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio - the market leader - got spectrum worth Rs 973.62 crore - the lowest in the three-way contest.

Vodafone Idea (VIL)'s bid for the spectrum was valued at around Rs 3510.4 crore.

According to sources, the demand note will outline both the options - upfront payment or payment through installments and is expected to be sent to various telecom companies early this week.

As per the terms of the bid document, payment has to be made within ten days of issue of demand note.
