Lucknow Samajwadi Party launched a week-long sapling plantation drive and organized 'bhandaras' (community parties) and blood donation camps to mark the birthday of its president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday.

Yadav was born on July 1, 1973.

Party workers are celebrating Yadav's birthday in a simple way by planting saplings, SP chief spokesperson Rajendra Chowdhury said.

"A state-wide 'PDA saplings' plantation program began on Monday and will continue till July 7 to mark party president Akhilesh Yadav's birthday," he said.

Under this programme, which will be organized in all villages of the state, "banyan, peepal and neem saplings will be planted as PDA trees, which will give the 'praanvaayu' of equality and social equity every day as a symbol of justice along with environmental conservation," said Chowdhury.

He added that efforts will be made to turn the "PDA" tree plantation campaign into a nationwide movement in the future.

Before the Lok Sabha elections, Yadav had coined the PDA's slogan -- Pichhadha, Dalit, Alpsankhyak (backward, Dalit and minority) -- to woo voters from these communities.
