Meerut (UP), Police on Monday arrested Meerut Samajwadi Party MLA Rafi Ansari for not appearing before the Allahabad High Court despite a non-bailable warrant issued against him in a 1995 case. The officers provided this information.

Ansari was arrested from Zaidpur area of ​​Barabanki district and produced before an MP/MLA court here, which sent him to 14-day judicial custody.

Superintendent of Police (City) Ayush Vikram Singh said Ansari was "missing" for the past few days and raids were being conducted to search for him.

The SP said that the High Court had issued several non-bailable warrants against him, but he did not appear in the court.

A case was registered against Ansari at the Civil Lines police station here in 1995 under Indian Penal Code section 427 (causing mischief worth fifty rupees). The arrested MLA was accused of causing traffic jam and damaging property.

Singh said that the High Court had ordered that Ansari be arrested and produced before it. Police have formed a team to arrest the SP MLA.

Another police officer said Ansari was produced in the MP/MLA court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Nadeem Anwar around 12 noon amid tight security. The court sent him to judicial custody for 14 days.

Earlier this month, the high court had refused to quash the criminal proceedings against Ansari, saying he had failed to appear before the trial court despite nearly 100 non-bailable warrants being issued against him between 1997 and 2015. Failed to happen.
