This year, the area under sowing of pulses has increased by 50 percent to 36.81 lakh hectares from last year's 23.78 lakh hectares. This is a good sign because there is a shortage of pulses in the country which has increased food inflation.

The area under paddy cultivation has increased from 50.26 lakh hectares last year to 59.99 lakh hectares.

Similarly, the area under oilseeds has also increased to 8.31 lakh hectares from 51.97 lakh hectares last year, the data shows. Higher area under oilseeds is also a welcome development as it will reduce the country's edible oil import bill, thereby saving valuable foreign exchange.

Besides, the area under sugarcane has increased from 55.45 lakh hectares last year to 56.88 lakh hectares this year, while the area under soybean has more than doubled from 28.86 lakh hectares to 60.63 lakh tonnes.
