According to the ministry, Shin made the pledge during Bastille Day celebrations organized by the French Embassy in Seoul and the French Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry on the Sebitsaem artificial island on the Han River in Seoul. This year's Bastille Day falls on a Sunday.

"The Republic of Korea is serving as a bulwark to defend the free world against forces attempting to change the status quo by force, and (we) stand in solidarity with value-sharing countries like France to safeguard peace. "The stability of the free world," he said, according to his office, Yonhap news agency reported.

Shin also praised the service of French soldiers who participated in the 1950-53 Korean War as part of the United Nations forces that supported South Korea, including the late Captain Robert Goupil.

About 170 cadets from France's Saint-Cyr Military Academy and over 100 cadets from South Korean military academies participated in the ceremony.

According to the ministry, the French cadets participating in the event belong to the class of Captain Robert Goupil, named after the late veteran who died in battle during the three-year conflict.
