North Sound (Antigua): Opener Quinton de Kock hit a blistering half-century and shared a 110-run partnership with captain Aiden Markram as South Africa defeated the US by 18 runs in their opening T20 World Cup Super Eight (Group 2) match. . on Wednesday.

De Kock scored 74 off 40 balls, while Markram scored 46 off 32 balls, helping the Proteas reach 194 for 4 in 20 overs. They then restricted the United States batsmen to 176/6, with fast bowler Kagiso Rabada (3/18) doing most of the damage.

USA opener Andries Goss shocked the Proteas with his bold strokeplay but his unbeaten 80 off 47 balls went in vain. He got full support from Harmeet Singh, who contributed 38 runs.

Earlier, De Kock hit seven fours and five sixes in his innings. Heinrich Klaasen remained unbeaten on 36, while Tristan Stubbs contributed 20 as SA made a big impact in their Super Eight game.

For the United States, who chose to field, left-arm fast bowler Saurabh Netravalkar and spinner Harmeet Singh took two wickets each.
