Rajkot: Some areas of Rajkot in Gujarat have been declared affected after two cases of cholera were reported, an official said on Thursday.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal infection caused by consumption of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It can cause severe diarrhea, dehydration and can prove fatal if not treated.

He said the notification declaring an area within a radius of 2 kilometers as cholera affected was issued by Collector Prabhav Joshi on July 5 under the Epidemic Diseases Act.

"It will be in force for a period of two months," he said. The areas include Lohanagar, where two cases of cholera were found, railway crossing and Gondal Road. Under the notification, iced food items are banned till September 4. Has gone."

Jayesh Vakani, Medical Officer of Health, Rajkot Municipal Corporation, said preliminary investigation revealed that the disease may have started due to contaminated water brought from outside.

"Some people living in Lohanagar sell fish. They bring fish from the outskirts and store it in a small pit in their house before selling it after a few days. There have been two cases of cholera due to contamination in that water. As per rules, an area is declared cholera affected if even a single case is registered,” said Wakani, who has been appointed cholera control officer.

Vakani said the situation is under control and 25 teams have been deployed to conduct surveys and detect suspected cases. Apart from regular checking of water and food, 1,500 residents of these areas are being monitored.

“Through the notification, we have informed all government and private hospitals in Kalol to keep a close watch on the patients and inform the authorities if any suspected case is reported,” Vakani said.
