Jammu: A soldier was allegedly shot dead by his father-in-law over a marital dispute in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday.

Village Defense Guard (VDG) member Daulat Ram allegedly opened fire with his .303 rifle at his son-in-law Amit Singh, an Army jawan, in Kembal Danga village, causing chest injuries, he said.

Police said Ram, a resident of Panasa village, had come to meet his son-in-law, who was posted outside and had come to his home on leave.

However, when he learned that Singh had beaten his wife over a long-standing marital dispute, he lost control and in a fit of rage opened fire, seriously injuring the constable.

On receiving information about the incident, the police team reached the spot and both Singh and his wife, who were injured in the fight, were taken to the hospital.

Police said that after initial treatment, Singh was referred to the Government Medical College (GMC) hospital, but he died on the way to Jammu.

He said that the accused has been arrested and further investigation is underway.
