New Delhi: Experts at AIIMS, Delhi, have said that unhealthy lifestyle and social habits such as smoking, consumption of alcohol and processed food and excessive use of cell phones can damage sperm DNA.

He said many people are not even aware that poor sperm quality in men can lead to infertility, frequent miscarriages in women and birth defects in children.

Professor D Reema Dada, Department of Anatomy, AIIMS, said that the role of the father in conception and fetal development cannot be ignored. Sperm contains minimal antioxidants and its DNA repair machinery is silent, he said.

"Thus, unhealthy lifestyle and social habits such as smoking, alcohol consumption, excessive use of cell phones, processed foods, calorie-dense nutritional diets, obesity and exposure to environmental pollutants lead to oxidative stress in the seminal vesicles and sperm. DNA is damaged,” said Dr. Dada.Besides, delay in the age of marriage and conception leads to decline in sperm quality, the doctor said at a press conference at AIIMS.

With increasing age, sperm DNA quality declines and this can lead to the accumulation of de novo germline mutations and epimutations, meaning that damaged sperm can lead to congenital malformations, childhood cancers, autosomal dominant disorders and autism, schizophrenia. And complex behavioral disorders such as bipolar disorder may occur. Children, grandfather said further.

"Earlier studies from our laboratory have shown that high levels of DNA damage are associated with spontaneous pregnancy failure and recurrent pregnancy loss," he said.

Men need to be aware that their habits and psychological stress leave epigenetic marks and signatures on their sperm, Dr. Dada said. He said, “Adopting a healthy lifestyle and doing yoga daily improves mitochondrial and nuclear DNA integrity.,

"Yoga results in increased expression of genes coding for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory genes, and DNA repair mechanisms. Yoga increases the expression and activity of telomerase, as well as reduces oxidative stress and sperm telomere length. Maintains and thus prevents accelerated aging of sperm.

Dr. Dada said, “Also, oxidative damage in the spermatic organs is reduced and this aids in fetal development. Regular practice of yoga improves the quality of DNA and thus prevents genetic and epigenetic diseases in the offspring.” The burden is reduced, and the health of the children is positively affected."
