There has been a slight improvement in the flood situation in Guwahati, Assam as the number of people affected by floods in 27 districts has come down to around 18.80 lakh, officials said on Tuesday.

With six more deaths reported on Monday, the death toll in floods, landslides and storms this year has risen to 85, he said.

Several major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, are flowing above the danger level at isolated places and rain is forecast at isolated places.

Officials said the affected population in 27 districts was 18,80,700, while around 22.75 lakh people were affected by the floods on Sunday.

Dhubri is the most affected district by floods with around 4.75 lakh people, followed by Cachar with over 2.01 lakh people and Barpeta with around 1.36 lakh people affected by the floods.

Officials said the administration is operating 543 camps and relief distribution centers in 25 districts, currently looking after 3,45,500 displaced people.

Rescue operations are being conducted in the affected areas by multiple agencies including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and SDRF.

The Regional Meteorological Center in Guwahati on Monday said a cyclonic circulation lies up to 1.5 km above mean sea level over Assam and adjoining areas.

It said there is a possibility of thunderstorm and lightning at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura in the next 24 hours.

Brahmaputra river is flowing above the danger mark in Nimatighat, Tezpur, Guwahati and Dhubri.

Other major rivers crossing the red mark are Subansiri at Badtighat, Burhidihing at Chenimari, Dikhau at Sivasagar, Disang at Nanglamuraghat, Kopili at Dharamatul, Barak at BP Ghat, Sankosh at Golokganj and Kushiyara at Karimganj town.

Officials said damage to infrastructure, including embankments, roads and bridges, was reported from different parts of the state.
