In New Delhi [India], Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday chaired a meeting with finance ministers of states and union territories in the national capital.

The pre-budget meeting was called by the Finance Ministry to receive suggestions for the upcoming Union Budget 2024-25.

Rajasthan Finance Minister Diya Kumari later told ANI that she had made several suggestions about Rajasthan.

She said that they have sought special funds for the development of East Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP). The BJP has expressed its commitment to the project and party leaders in Rajasthan are eager to complete the project in five years.

Rajasthan also demanded funds for construction of new roads and railway lines.

As is traditional, the Union Finance Ministry consults with states and stakeholders of the economy before the union budget. As part of this consultation, Sitharaman met economists, finance and capital markets experts and industry bodies.

The Minister of Finance met on June 19 with a group of economists. It was attended by Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, Finance Secretary, secretaries of departments of economic affairs, revenue, financial services and corporate affairs as well as the chief economic advisor.

The Finance Minister also met with capital and finance experts and industry bodies on 20 June. The discussions covered topics ranging from the NBFC sector, GST rules and improving the capital market.

During the meeting, industry representatives called for a restructuring of the GST tax, a reduction in the tax and an increase in capital expenditure.

Sitharaman will present the Union Budget for 2024-25 in the third week of July. Sitharman had presented an interim budget on February 1 ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. She has so far presented six budgets in a row and will create a record when she presents the complete budget for the new term of the BJP-led Union government.
