Sinner saved all three break points he faced and produced a brilliant debut performance, winning 95 per cent (20/21) of the points after his first delivery after 76 minutes.

Sinner is chasing his second title on clay after his victory in Umag in 2022. He is making his fourth appearance at the Principality, where he reached the semi-finals last season.

Fourth-seeded Daniil Medvedev reached the third round in the Principality for the third time with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Frenchman Gael Monfils.

Medvedev, who reached the semi-finals in Monte-Carlo last season, will next face Karen Khachanov, who defeated world number 17 Francisco Cerundolo 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Medvedev enjoyed success on clay last year, winning his first tour-level title on the surface at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Rome. The 28-year-old is chasing his first trophy of the season this week, with his best result at the Australian Open in 2024.Casper Ruud entered the third round by defeating Chile's Alejandro Tabillo 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 2 minutes.

Ruud, who has captured nine of his 10 tour-level titles on clay, will meet 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz after his 21st tour-level win of the year.

In other action, Holger Rune was leading 6-3, 2-1 when rain stopped play for the day. The 20-year-old, who is competing in his first clay-court match of the season, reached the title match in Monte-Carlo last year.

Grigor Dimitrov, fresh from his final race in Miami, was leading 6–4, 2–1 against Miomir Kecmanovic when rain stopped their match.
