Gangtok, Sikkim Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) on Wednesday issued an advisory alerting residents living in embankment areas to be prepared for a possible rise in the water level of Teesta river in the coming days.

Citing the advisory of the Central Water Commission (CWC) regarding the current rainfall pattern, the SSDMA stressed the importance of vigilance due to the unpredictable nature of weather systems.

"The Central Water Commission has issued continued advisories with regard to the current rainfall pattern, which indicates a possible rise in river water levels," it said.

It urged all residents of the Teesta River Basin to remain informed about the latest weather forecasts and advisories through local news channels, radio broadcasts, or official government websites.

Residents should keep an emergency kit that includes essential items such as non-perishable food, water, medicine, clothing, important documents, flashlight and batteries and store valuable and important items in waterproof containers or store them on a high level in their space.
